The earliest semi submersibles were developed for the use of offshore drilling platforms, but there are also uses including semi submersible crane vessels, SSCV, offshore support vessels, OSV, offshore production platforms and so on. Many semi submersibles are fixed in a specific position by mooring and do not have power. Therefore, they need to be transported to the setting place by heavy lift shift, which is also a kind of special ships such as ships often adopting semi submersibles; However, there are also semi submersible platforms with slow-moving capability, such as sea-based X-band radar, which can move at sea with their own power.
